Antonio Lopez Reche

Antonio Lopez Reche was born in Barcelona, Spain in 1966. He studied Fine Art at Barcelona University and undertook an Erasmus exchange at Central St Martins in London, where his research into the field of contemporary sculpture focused on installation and conceptual art. Over the past eighteen years he has been developing a body of work that takes mythology as the central theme of his beautifully crafted figurative bronzes.

Antonio now lives and works in South East London creating works for galleries and private clients, as well as site specific pieces. His work is featured in gallery collections in the UK, Europe, the United States and Hong Kong.

At the heart of Antonio’s work is the act of modelling and creating forms that convey movement, strength and his interest in capturing the rawness of materials such as clay, wax or plaster into bronze, as well as the expressive energy of tools marks and spontaneous modelling.

“As an artist, the legacy of the great masters that sets the foundation for what art is throughout history is something that cannot be ignored, and furthermore must be seen as a fundamental reference. In my opinion, in addition to their technical brilliance […], the reason why great masters survive the test of time is their gift for depicting or touching something that is universal and that defines humankind beyond temporary trends, something that runs the course of history, like a thread that cannot be broken and reveals who we are. Being Greek Mythology, one of the main pillars of western culture and the principal reference in the history of art, it seems to me that in my hope to get closer to learning who we are, mythology is a good starting point”.
