Rosa Wiland Holmes

Ceramicist Rosa Wiland Holmes grew up on the island of Bornholm in Denmark. She started her career as a Fashion designer but discovered a love of ceramics in 2014. Seeking to communicate her passion for the beauty of the island that inspires her work, she makes pieces that express natural shapes, textures and colours through her exploration of the potential provided by the interaction of clay, oxides and glazes.

“The inspiration for my work comes from the nature around us. I think nature is extraordinary and I seek to capture its beauty in my work. I love throwing on the potter’s wheel, it is so satisfying to let the clay find its way into beautiful organic shapes with my bare hands. When I am throwing, I am in the moment and the world around me disappears.

I play with the contrast in dark and light, smooth and rough, like the sweeping waves, rocky cliffs, or the smoothness of a stone on the beach and the layers of colour tones, textures and happy accidents that make each piece unique. All of it ignites my imagination. Immediately I begin to think what materials to use and how to treat them to recreate colours and textures to produce works that are abstract and sculptured in their feel and shape. The beauty is in the imperfection - the more you look the more you discover”.
