Fi Wallace Velarde is a painter and printmaker whose work is inspired by the ever-changing colours, shapes and textures of Devon’s land and seascapes. Fi’s printmaking practice runs parallel to her works on canvas and board: she makes beautifully composed monotypes, a kind of handmade print that results in single works created from multiple layers of detail, alongside vivid, semi-abstracted paintings enriched by punchy colour, flowing lines and dazzling areas of pattern.
As a starting point for her work, Fi draws on the plein air drawings and spontaneous thoughts and ideas scribbled in her many sketchbooks. These notes constantly inform her painting and printmaking as she builds each image in layers, pairing finely tuned colour with restrained visual description. Her handmade prints are defined by simple linear details and soft tones, while her paintings are defined by bright colours and rich textures, often enhanced with the addition of collage.
