Bjork Haraldsdottir's professional background in Architecture has a strong influence on her ceramic practice. Dramatic landscapes and her exposure to the extraordinary in nature, which reflects her upbringing in Iceland, are also key reference points in her work, as well as diverse architectural form, and Nordic pattern and folklore.
Bjork started her ceramic 'pattern journey' by referencing old textile work and stitching patterns from Nordic Culture. This developed over time into patterns inspired by ideas and images drawn from nature and daily life. Her ceramics are built in stoneware clay and painted with slip which is then scraped back to reveal the base material in two-tone monochrome patterns. The scrape marks are left visible so that the surface is a plane of shallow relief, much like a tapestry.
