    GYRATING METAMORPHIC FLOWERS

    22ND JULY - 9TH SEPTEMBER 2023

  • Gyrating Metamorphic Flowers is the name given to this group of six works on paper by Italian painter and sculptor Alessandro Twombly (b.1959 in Rome).

The Oxford Dictionary defines ‘metamorphic’ as:  ‘…..altered considerably from the original structure and mineralogy by pressure and heat:’ from the Greek ‘meta’ meaning ‘changed’ and ‘morphe’ meaning ‘form’.

In these sensory works figures, energies, forms - mineral, vegetable, human, animal - burst and glide across the paper, energetic, creatural, elegant, urgent, there and not there, transformed with masterful abstraction and colour from erstwhile floral composition to something deeper, something more compelling. Alessandro Twombly’s work cannot be neatly encapsulated by orderly genres and tidy generalisations but simply by ‘radici dell’essere’ - the ‘rootedness of being’ - at the heart of everything he does.

  • Alessandro has had many solo exhibitions for his paintings and sculptures from New York to Rome, Berlin, Basel, London, Brussels, Geneva, Köln, Buenos Aires, Helsinki and Milan, as well as in joint exhibitions worldwide.

From March to September 2023 Alessandro is the featured artist of the Fondazione Ghisla Art Collection in Locarno, Switzerland. His exhibition ‘Radici dell’essere’ consists of 18 large paintings and several sculptures.

In April 2024 Alessandro will have a solo exhibition at the Amanita Gallery in New York City, his first time exhibiting in the city for 20 years.

Alessandro lives and works in the hills of Lazio, northeast of Rome, in a house Richard Milazzo calls  - for very obvious reasons - The House of 10 Dogs.
